Our fabulous shop, Yarn Etc, was created in March 2016 when Horticulturalist and Harrogate Garden Designer Fiona Burks, known as Fi or FiBee to her yarny friends, took over her local wool shop which was set to close due to the owners retirement. Despite not knowing how to knit, Fiona decided on a whim to take a complete change of career path (ok she did know how to crochet so hadn’t gone completely mad).
Fi at the time was a crocheter and regularly used the Wool Shop on Knaresborough Road, but when the owner decided to close the shop Fiona thought it would be such a shame to lose yet another Local Yarn Store and decided to make her an offer.
Less than 18 months after Fi’s career change Yarn Etc in Harrogate was awarded Highly Commended in the Knitting & Crochet Awards for Best Local Yarn Store in the North of England where it has stayed for the next five years.
Fi has always had big plans for the business, which is so much more than just a shop selling yarn. The shop also runs a whole host of classes based around yarn and crafts and other types of yarny events. All of the Staff are very knowledgeable about the yarns available in store and can offer help to anyone who is looking to choose yarn. We are here to help and advise you throughout the process from assisting with colour choice and patterns, yarn weights and fibre right down to picking out the perfect needles for the weight of yarn.
Entering into Yarn Etc’s Harrogate store is like entering the rainbow with brightly its coloured yarns in a huge array of weights and fibres. Ranging from fully traceable British yarn from Fi’s brand-new yarn venture, The Harrogate Yarn Company, to Eco Yarns and Recycled Yarns, Cottons, Linens, Acrylics, Silk and Cashmere blends – there really is something for everyone’s taste and budget. We hope you think the website is the same, bright and colourful and inspiringly full of yarn.
As well as all manner of yarns, we offer a vast array of knitting needles, hooks, sundries and giftware which available both in store and online.
We have customers come visit us from all over the world including people coming from America, Australia and New Zealand as well as nearer to home from Europe and other parts of the UK to buy yarn from our little emporium. We love to see everyone, we have an amazing local support network of crafters who mean the world to us and those who visit us from further away are very much appreciated and welcomed into our fold.
Yarn Etc’s team have been nominated by their amazing customers every year for the last five years in the British Knitting and Crochet Awards
As you can see we have a new whizzy bang website which we hope you really enjoy. We want it to be more than just a shop, we want it to be a place of inspiration, community and support too. Please do sign up for our newsletter and we can keep you up to date with everything we are doing in store and online no matter where in the world you are.
Eco, Organic & Recycled Yarns
We are passionate at Yarn Etc about trying our best to increase the range of eco yarns and organic yarns along with stocking as many recycled yarns as we can. We have a good range of yarns that meet these specifications including organic cottons and wools and yarns made from recycled woollen garments, recycled acrylic waste products from the spinning process and recycled plastic itself.
These yarns are becoming more and more available to us over the last couple of years and we will continue to try and increase the amount of these yarns so help do our bit, even in just a small way, to reduce the worlds carbon footprint.
Blog & Newsletter
We love a good blog round here and on our new website we will be blogging more frequently about the products we have in store and what is floating our boat within the yarn community.
There are so many subjects to talk about and we would love you to come join us, grab a cuppa and sit and take a few minutes to read our ramblings.
You can sign up for the blog and our newsletters too and we will keep you updated of what yarns are arriving in store and online and what events and classes we run and any special subscriber bonuses we might treat you to.
Yarn Etc’s team have been nominated by their amazing customers every year for the last five years in the British Knitting and Crochet Awards and those votes haven’t been wasted. Yarn Etc has been awarded Highly Commended on each occasion for the Best Local Yarn Store for the North of England which is just brilliant. It means such much to Fi and the team to be shown such support by everyone and also brings with it the added highlight of showing the rest of the yarny world that we are here and so come visit us.
All this is so vital in this day and age where its just so easy to use just a few larger online retailers for all your purchases. Shopping for yarn should be and we endeavour to make it an interactive tactile experience.
You need to see and feel the yarns you want to work with and we do our best to give you that same experience online as you get in store.
