Summer Wool Festival Ampthill 2024 debrief!!

I can’t believe just how quickly this years’ Summer Wool fest came and went. It was, as always a wonderful weekend filled with gorgeous stalls of stunning yarn and event more fabulous people – it was super to see so many faces that I have met each year over the last three years, thank you so much for coming and saying "Hi" and showing off what you made with your purchases from last year, they all look amazing.

Every year I decide in advance that I will have a trial run in the Den at the shop so I know where everything will go but every year I fail and just fill up the car(s) with faaaarrrr to many products and kits and off I go haha.

Read my full blog here, which includes pictures of the final set up.

Rico has done it again! I don’t know where to start with this new yarn.

Its got 20% alpaca, 20% wool and 60% acrylic which makes it a superb all rounder with a good quantity of the natural soft stuff with the stability of the acrylic and its the most amazing price to boot!

Availability and ordering online is here Rico Essentials Soft Alpaca DK – Yarn etc…

And you can read more in our blog here.
I spotted this beauty when I was at the trade show in Cologne earlier in the year and I've had to wait patiently for it to arrive but, finally, it is here! This is the squishiest softest yarn and perfect for kids and grown ups alike. Anyone who loves chenille is going to be head over heels for this.

Grab yourself a ball or three here Rico Creative Chenillovely DK – Yarn etc…

Sock weather is on its way!
So who’s a sockaholic? Me haha, yes, I put my hands up, its me, I am a complete sockaholic and I always have (at least) one sock on the go. So as you can imagine I was thrilled when I had to make up a sock sample for the shop in the new Rico Socks Soft Spin. What a gorgeous yarn this is – it is beautifully soft and the subtle stripes are just gorgeous.

Find out more about it in our blog here.
Rico’s really on trend this season and this new Rico Luxury Alpaca Superfine Heavens Uni Chunky – Yarn etc… is bang on when it comes to it!

So what's been on my needles this month? Well, quite a lot actually...read on!
I've been busy making socks for the shop this last month or two (aren't they the most portable summer project ever!!) These ones are Rico Bamboo Rainbow sock yarn and just heavenly to knit and the colours are just gorgeous.
Above is a sneak peak at some of the new The Harrogate Yarn Company Montpellier 4ply hand dyed 100% BFL sock yarn which has been hand dyed by Fiona exclusively for sale in store and online (shortly) at Yarn Etc.
One of my next finished projects for July/August is Patricia* the Emotional Support Chicken.
I had great fun making her out of a whole load of part balls of Aran weight yarn so she is the perfect stash buster - the pattern for the chicken is available in either knit or crochet which is amazing. Pattern for knitted here and pattern for crochet here.

Who doesn't need an emotional support chicken like Patricia* in their life!

*Patricia is named after one of my daughter Chloe's rescue chickens. Patricia sadly passed away recently after three happy years terrorising Chloe's Chihuahua Kiki.
I've been busy playing with some new yarn in store and here is the result.
Butterfly Cowl Kit
This is the Butterfly Cowl by Marinja Knits. The pattern uses simply 'wraps and turns' and was a joy to make over a couple of evenings and which I have made using some of our newly 'reintroduced' Louisa Harding Amitola. I adore this yarn and its making a very welcome return back in to the shop over the coming weeks. We are sooooooooo excited to have it back - if you haven't knit with it before you are in for a treat!

I have paired it with the Lang Noelle and we have made up some kits in this gorgeous blues/greys/mustard colourway, including the pattern and enough yarn to make two cowls so if you would like a kit then let us know and we will reserve one for you.
Kits available instore or online here.
I've had great fun making this stunning Cleo clutch bag by Petite Knits (pattern also available in store).
Knitted holding three strands of Crealino together its a fabulous knit and we have the bag opening clasps in store (and soon to be online too) and its very chic.

You can make this bag and line it yourself or you could do what I did and buy the ready made Petite Knit bag lining (available in small and large - both in store). I've attached this fabulous chain strap which I have to say is one of the best straps I've seen - its got some real weight to it and feels really solid and expensive and it's gorgeous. The Petite Knits chains are available in store (and will be online soon too).

I love that I have a bag that no one else has and I can't wait for an excuse to use it soon. Did I say it comes in two sizes and this is the small!
I know, more socks!! Like I said this is the perfect project to take away with you as it takes up hardly any room in your travel bag and also doesn't take an age to make.
I LOVE MAKING SOCKS, lol.
Rico Socks Neon Fairisle
This is the new Rico Neon Fairisle sock yarn which I have paired with Rico Neon Sock yarn to funk them up even more. Enough with two balls to make three pairs of socks and the combinations are endless. Best hot foot it over to the website or in store to pick up your yarn!
We love seeing what you are working on and what you have finished too. Keep tagging us in photos online or sharing on our Facebook page.

If you fancy a bit of yarn therapy don’t forget we are online and open 24 hours a day at www.yarnetc.co.uk and back open in person on Tuesday.

This month we are highlighting the lovely Painting Pots in Knaresborough.
Laura has been one of my favourite people for the last 8 years and she is fabulous. Her quirky shop is just brilliant and there are so many items to chose to paint or craft there you can lose many an hour having fun being creative.

I can highly recommend ladies night, take yourself a bottle and some snacks and have some fun with your friends or just go by yourself and paint away to your hearts content.

Great for families too, soooo many workshops for kids - Slime making anyone? - and did you know that the lovely Laura is responsible for creating and running the Great Knaresborough Bunny Hunt too. Pop in and say hi to Laura and her staff and get crafty!
Fiona Burks - Yarn etc
I hope you've enjoyed this latest edition of Yarns Unspun.

As always, if you need any help with finding the right pattern or just want to come and squish some yarn, we'd love to see you in the shop.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend everyone and see you soon lovelies! 😊
